Students from the Anesthesia and Nutrition Departments at the Faculty of Applied Science, Tishk International University (TIU), have successfully implemented an inspiring community development project titled “Turning Public Spaces into Learning Spaces: Little Free Libraries.” The initiative was carried out as part of the Introduction to Community Development and Behavior (IDCB)<\/em> course and aimed to address literacy gaps through innovative, community-based interventions.<\/p>\n

The project focused on promoting literacy advancement by establishing a self-sustaining network of book exchange repositories in high-traffic public locations. By increasing equitable access to books and educational resources, the initiative seeks to encourage lifelong learning and knowledge sharing within the community.<\/p>\n

As part of their efforts to build a diverse and meaningful collection of books, the students visited the Erbil International Book Fair, where they purchased a variety of books to stock the Little Free Libraries. This experience not only supported the project\u2019s goals but also encouraged students to engage directly with the local literary community and promote a culture of reading.<\/p>\n

To support the project financially, the student team organized a fundraising food event that showcased both creativity and teamwork. The event featured a variety of homemade foods and drinks. Through enthusiastic community participation, the team successfully raised 208,000 IQD by 4:30 PM, demonstrating strong public support for the initiative.<\/p>\n

The funds enabled the installation of three black aluminum-and-glass Little Free Library book boxes at strategic locations:<\/p>\n

  • Azadi Health Center \u2013 Reception Area<\/li>\n
  • Salahaddin University \u2013 College of Education Student Bus Station<\/li>\n
  • Tishk International University Campus \u2013 The garden between the Main Building and the Education Building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The project was managed with professionalism and dedication, ensuring a welcoming environment for all participants and visitors. Through focused teamwork and grassroots engagement, the students demonstrated how small, strategic actions can create meaningful and lasting community impact.<\/p>\n

    By turning public spaces into vibrant centers of learning, the Little Free Libraries initiative stands as an excellent example of how university students can contribute positively to society while applying community development principles in real-world settings. The project reflects Tishk International University\u2019s commitment to community service, sustainable development, and the promotion of education beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>
