On May 27, 2025, the Applied Science Faculty at Tishk International University (TIU), in collaboration with the Cybersecurity and Nutrition and Dietetics Departments, organized a workshop titled “Empowering Communities Against Tobacco.” Held in anticipation of World No Tobacco Day, the event aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promote a healthier, tobacco-free future.
The workshop was attended by a diverse audience, including Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ozdemir, Vice President for Academic Affairs, along with Deans, faculty, staff, and students from various departments. Esteemed speakers, including Prof. Dr. Faiq Hussain, Ms. Soghetha Dawood, and Dr. Hemin Ibrahim, provided insightful presentations on the physiological, psychological, and societal consequences of tobacco consumption.
Special Guests and Partnerships
The event was also honored by the presence of Dr. Aras Bradosty, a physician and media figure, who added significant value through his health advocacy. The workshop was professionally covered by the Rudaw Media Network, helping to amplify its message to a wider audience.
This timely event reinforced the university’s alignment with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
- SDG 4: Quality Education
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
The workshop was more than just a gathering of minds; it was a declaration of TIU’s ongoing commitment to a tobacco-free university environment and its broader role in empowering communities through education, advocacy, and sustainable health practices.
