The University recently hosted an International Workshop for Cybersecurity Students titled “Data in Our Work,” delivered by Ms. Roshna Omer Abdulrahman, Information Management Associate at the UNHCR Iraq, with the aim of deepening students’ applied understanding of data management within complex digital and humanitarian ecosystems. The session went beyond foundational concepts to examine how high-quality data underpins evidence-based decision-making at both strategic and operational levels, and how inefficiencies or inaccuracies in data pipelines can directly impact mission outcomes. Emphasis was placed on the end-to-end data lifecycle, including field data collection methodologies, data cleaning and validation processes, secure storage architectures, and analytical techniques used to generate actionable insights for reporting and planning. The workshop also addressed critical cybersecurity considerations, such as data classification, access control mechanisms, encryption practices, and risk mitigation strategies in environments where infrastructure may be limited and threats are heightened. In addition, Ms. Roshna highlighted the importance of data governance frameworks, clarifying roles, responsibilities, and compliance requirements necessary to ensure accountability and data integrity across organizations. Ethical dimensions were explored in depth, particularly the handling of personally identifiable and sensitive data in humanitarian contexts, where misuse or exposure could have serious consequences for vulnerable populations. Students engaged in analytical discussions and scenario-based reflections, examining real-world challenges such as balancing data accessibility with security, ensuring interoperability across systems, and maintaining trust in data-driven operations. Overall, the workshop provided a comprehensive, practice-oriented perspective on the convergence of cybersecurity and information management, reinforcing the need for professionals who can both secure and strategically leverage data, while aligning with the University’s broader commitment to equipping students with industry-relevant competencies and global professional awareness.
