On December 4, 2024, the Medical Analysis Department at Tishk International University (TIU) hosted a National Workshop to mark International Diabetes Day. The event, although held after the official date of November 14, extended the global awareness campaign focused on diabetes education, prevention, and management. This initiative was originally established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The workshop featured two distinguished speakers who offered valuable insights from both clinical and immunological viewpoints. The first speaker was Dr. Shayda Ziyad Jamil Al-Talabany, a lecturer at Hawler Medical University’s College of Medicine. She discussed the prevalence of diabetes in Kurdistan and Iraq, highlighting the complications linked with high blood sugar levels. Dr. Shayda also provided practical health tips for patients to manage their condition and reduce risks.

The second speaker was Dr. Ramiar Kamal Kheder, an Assistant Professor with a Ph.D. from the University of Leicester, UK. He explored the development of diabetes from an immunological perspective, focusing on how high blood sugar affects cellular processes and immune cell function. Dr. Ramiar also explained the role of inflammation in diabetes complications and suggested ways to improve patient health, such as maintaining a healthy gut.

The event was a great success, providing attendees with useful knowledge to better understand and manage diabetes. Through expert-led discussions, the workshop emphasized the importance of ongoing education and awareness in the fight against this global health challenge.
