International Diabetes Day Observance

On December 4th, 2024, the Medical Analysis Department at Tishk International University conducted a significant national workshop commemorating International Diabetes Day. While World Diabetes Day is globally recognized on November 14th, this extended observance allowed for comprehensive exploration of diabetes education, prevention, and management strategies, continuing the awareness campaign initially established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and World Health Organization (WHO).

Regional Diabetes Epidemiology and Management

Dr. Shayda Ziyad Jamil Al-Talabany, lecturer at Hawler Medical University’s College of Medicine and Family Medicine specialist, delivered a presentation focusing on the regional impact of diabetes. Her comprehensive discussion covered:

  • Current prevalence rates of diabetes throughout Kurdistan and Iraq

  • Pathophysiological effects of hyperglycemia on bodily systems

  • Mechanisms through which elevated blood sugar leads to diabetic complications

  • Practical health habits for effective disease management

  • Preventive strategies to avoid complication development

  • Patient empowerment through lifestyle modifications

Immunological Perspectives on Diabetes Pathogenesis

Dr. Ramiar Kamal Kheder, Assistant Professor in Infection, Immunity and Inflammation with extensive international research experience, provided advanced insights into diabetes from an immunological standpoint. His presentation elaborated on:

  • Immunopathological mechanisms underlying diabetes development

  • Hyperglycemia’s impact on cellular autophagy processes

  • Effects on immune cell function and regulation

  • Inflammatory pathways activated by persistent hyperglycemia

  • Connection between chronic inflammation and diabetic complications

  • Gut microbiome management as a therapeutic approach for health improvement

Successful Knowledge Exchange

The workshop generated substantial engagement among attendees, who benefited greatly from the comprehensive information presented by both expert speakers. The event successfully combined clinical management perspectives with advanced research insights, providing a holistic understanding of diabetes that bridges practical patient care with cutting-edge scientific knowledge.

This national workshop demonstrated TIU’s commitment to addressing significant public health challenges through collaborative education and knowledge dissemination, contributing meaningfully to diabetes awareness and management within the academic and healthcare communities.
