The Medical Analysis Department at Tishk International University successfully organized the World Diabetes Day International Workshop on November 26, bringing together esteemed academics, professionals, and students to raise awareness and deepen scientific understanding of diabetes mellitus. The event was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, reflecting the university’s commitment to global health promotion, scientific learning, and international collaboration.

The workshop was honored by the attendance of several distinguished guests, including Dr. Fatih Cura, Vice President of Tishk International University; Prof. Dr. Faiq Hussain, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science; and Dr. Tola Faraj, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science. The event featured two keynote speakers.

The first speaker, Professor Dr. Aryan Ganjo, a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease at HMU and an academic staff member at Tishk International University, delivered an insightful presentation on diabetes. Her presentation covered the general symptoms and global prevalence of diabetes, the importance of early awareness, and the diagnostic approaches used in clinical settings. She also discussed the emerging role of the human microbiota in diabetes, highlighting new scientific perspectives. Her contribution strongly supported SDG 3 through promoting health awareness and SDG 4 by enhancing academic knowledge in the field of medical sciences.

The second speaker, Professor Mohammad Awual Ibrahim, a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, joined the workshop virtually. His presentation, “Unlocking New Therapies and Diagnostics for Diabetes Mellitus: Sialobiology to the Rescue,” explored innovative therapeutic strategies from a biochemical point of view. He explained the role of sialic acid in developing new diabetes treatments and presented several experimental trials focusing on novel diagnostic and therapeutic advancements. His participation from abroad demonstrated the spirit of SDG 17, emphasizing international cooperation for advancing scientific research and healthcare solutions.

Following the academic sessions, attendees participated in free blood glucose testing using glucometer devices, reinforcing the workshop’s dedication to public health and early disease detection under SDG 3. The event concluded with the distribution of healthy snacks to promote balanced dietary habits.

The workshop marked an important step in supporting diabetes education and early detection reflecting Tishk International University’s ongoing commitment to the SDGs.
