International Workshop on Biochemistry of Ageing Process

In collaboration with the University of Putra Malaysia and Kaduna State University, the Medical Analysis Department, Faculty of Applied Sciences at Tishk International University (TIU) organized an International Workshop on Biochemsitry of the Ageing Process, held on December 14th, 2023. The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Sultan T. Abu Orabi, President of Tishk International University (TIU); Assistant Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ozdemir, Vice President; Prof. Dr. Faiq Hussain, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science; as well as deans of other faculties, heads of departments, academic lecturers, and other distinguished guests.

The workshop’s speakers, Prof. Dr. Jaafaru Sani Mohammed, with a PhD in Medical Biotechnology; Prof. Zainab Kasim Mohammed, with a PhD in Molecular Biology and Cancer Study; and Associate Prof. Dr. Norshariza Nordin, with a PhD in Biomedical Science, delved into the biochemical process of aging. They emphasized that aging is a highly complex and multifactorial phenomenon.

At the cellular level, aging is characterized by a gradual accumulation of damage and dysfunction caused by various factors, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and environmental exposures. These factors can lead to alterations in key cellular processes such as DNA repair, protein synthesis, and energy metabolism, ultimately resulting in a decline in physiological function and an increased risk of age-related diseases. A major contributor to the biochemical process of aging is oxidative stress, which arises from the buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body. ROS can damage cellular components such as proteins, lipids, and DNA, and trigger a cascade of downstream effects that contribute to aging and disease.

The workshop was highly informative, highlighting the factors that affect the ageing process and providing insight into how the physiological functions of cells and the body decline from a biochemical perspective.
