Abstract
Introduction: Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is the commonest benign neoplasm of the ovary that consist of at least two of the three germ cell layers.
Aims: to assess the clinicopathological characteristics of mature cystic teratoma and to determine the frequency of mature cystic teratoma of ovary in Erbil city.
Methods: This was a cross sectional study of 125 cases of MCT of ovary received during a period of 16 months from January 2021 to April 2022 at maternity teaching hospital and private histopathology laboratories in Erbil city. The data regarding age of patients, material status, parity, clinical presentation, size and location of tumor, type of surgery and morphological features of mature cystic teratoma were analyzed.
Results: Out of 635 cases of ovarian cyst, 125 cases were MCT. The mean age of the patient with MCT was 29.19±7.74 years and the mean size of tumor was 6.4168 cm. The abdominal pain was the most common presentation of these tumors.
Conclusions: MCT is the commonest type of ovarian tumors, that can occur in reproductive age, children, and postmenopausal women. According to the location of the tumor 48.80% were located on the right side, early approach in the form of a conservative surgical management may have effects on the puberty and fertility of affected patients.
