The Medical Analysis Department at Tishk International University organized an awareness seminar for the students, focusing on the environmental and health impacts of single use plastics. The event, held on May 6, 2026, featured a seminar by a department alumna Ms. Shnya Mohammed. The Head of Medical Analysis Department, Dr. Sami Mamand fostered the initiative.

Ms. Shnya emphasized on the urgent need to replace disposable plastic water cups with reusable cup holders and refillable water bottles. Since plastic waste is a growing crisis and is one of the factors polluting the environment. The goal of the seminar was to motivate everyone from students, staff, and the wider community to choose refillable bottles over single-use plastics in order to protect the environment.

The presentation included practical data on how long plastic items persist in the environment, and that simple behavioral changes can significantly reduce the problem.  On the other hand drinking from plastic bottles can cause serious health problems due to the microplastic particles that are ingested. Some re-usable water cups were distributed for the participants to encourage them to decrease using plastic bottles.

The initiative directly supports several SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being),by reducing exposure to harmful chemicals from plastic waste and promoting a cleaner environment and SDG 13 (Climate Action), because plastic production and incineration generate greenhouse gas emissions.

Students responded positively, with several pledging to switch to reusable bottles on campus.
